Restaurant Reviews: Bar Louie (Baton Rouge, LA)
Bar Louie is a relatively new place in Baton Rouge, and seem to be creating a buzz about town. So of course we had to see if it lives up to its expectations. Bar Louie is Located in the new development around the Mall of Louisiana. This place is Very large with and inside and an Outside bar. They also have 2 outdoor patios with tables to “Al Fresco”. Atmosphere is impressive with modern decor and well dressed and punctual staff. The theme here seems to be bar food refined to a cross of the classics with a fine dining twist. Our water was Very knowledgeable on the menu and super friendly. Contrary to reviews we read prior to coming here, the service was very good. All of our dishes came out within a reasonable time and everything was as it should have been. We think those that had issues in with service were just experiencing opening pains that most new restaurants endure in the first week or so before they work out the kinks.
OK, on to the FOOD! First off we were impressed with teh extensive list of Half prices appetizers offered daily during happy hour. So we chose 2. The Firecracker Flat bread and the Boneless wings. The Flat Bread was fire baked perfectly. nice and crispy. topped with five spice beef, spring onion, mozzarella, provolone, Szechwan sauce, carrot & sesame seeds. Beef was very nice and was complimented well by the sweet and spicy sauce. The kicker on this dish was the pickled carrot. It really made the whole dish “pop” We were also impressed with the size. it was cut into 8 sizable slices
The Boneless wings are available in several flavors. We chose the classic Buffalo. I am somewhat of a Buffalo wing connoisseur, so I knew these would have to be really good to pass with me. These wings passed with flying colors!! Very crispy outside, Moist & tender inside, just how I like. The sauce was scratch made no doubt. Not just your average bottles Wing sauce that most places use. Again portion was very nice!
For entrees We started out with a dish off the “small plate” Menu. Yet it was anything but small! On the advice of our waiter we got the Chicken Nachos. As you can see these are large enough for 2 easily. House fried Chips, Piled High with Home made Queso sauce, Sour Cream, Guacamole, Pico de Gallo, Fresh cut Jalapeno, Grilled Chicken & Black Beans simmered in spicy chicken stock. The black beans really stood out. I was amazed at the freshness of the toppings. jalapenos are cut to order for maximum crunchiness and freshness. Queso is so good you could drink it from a glass!! Very creamy and did not form that “skin” on top as some cheese sauce does as it sits. Chips were also very nice lightly crisp and thin but held up to the toppings. Will order this again for sure!!
The second entree we tested was something called “Mexican Sunrise” This is a different and interesting dish. A layered cheese quesadilla served with black beans, salsa verde, salsa rojo, lettuce, cilantro, topped with fried egg. The flavor combo was different but good. Took a bite or 2 to get used to it but once we did we liked this dish. The only issue we had was the salsa verde was overpowering. We questioned weather it was even needed in this dish. Maybe the cook that night just put to much, but We both agreed the dish would be better without it all together. But as I said overall the dish was nice and I could see eating this again in the future.
on Bar Louie to come in the future. We plan to test out their extensive Drink Menu next time.
