Sonny’s Boast “real Open Pit” Style BBQ. They have been open in Baton Rouge for over 15 years. On Sunday at lunch time you will not find an open seat to save your life. Locals flock here for the sliced pork and Ribs in particular. they started out serving ONLY sliced pork Shoulder. They have expanded over the years to now include everything from pulled beef to smoked chicken and turkey, several types of Ribs, and even most recently they have added several appetizers, steaks and Seafood.
This place also has an Old school salad bar, that has everything normal salad bars have PLUS all kinds of pasta salads, dessert Items, diced meats, chips and salsa, and several house made soups or stews. Well over 40 items on the salad bar for sure. You can easily make a meal out of just the bar.
We started out with the Corn Nuggets for an appetizer. These are balls of creamed corn battered and fried. Very Crispy and not greasy at all. Corn was fresh and the Nuggets were delightful when dipped in one of Their 4 BBQ sauces.
Now on to the BBQ. I Could not decide what to get, so I got a bit of everything! I chose the Super House Combo. It came with all the staples of BBQ. Sliced Pork, Beef Brisket, Smoked Chicken and Spare Ribs (choice of St. Louis style or Dry Rubbed), garlic bread and 2 side dishes. I went with the Dry Rub Ribs. Baked beans and Fried for my Sides. The sliced pork was very tender as usual. Was a tad fatty but was still excellent. Beef was moist and flavorful. I loved the chicken. Skin was slightly crispy and fall off the bone tender! Dry Rub Ribs were also very good! marinaded in only a “dry Rub” made of various seasonings and spices. then smoked. The rub forms a nice black crust protecting the meat to keep it moist. Ribs were Tender but still had to sink your teeth in and pull to get meat off the bone (which I like in a spare rib)
Baked Beans were home made with chunks of Ham, beef and pork simmered in with the beans and is fall apart tender. It keeps the flavor changing. One bite you may not get any meat, then you get some ham, then a few bites later you get some beef or pork. Very nice! Fries are Crinkle cut and crispy. A nice texture contrast that stands up to the rest of the plate. I could not resist and smothered my fries with the “Smokin” BBQ sauce.
We also sampled the baby back Ribs. Now you want to talk tender. These are the definition of tender!! they literally fall off the bone (like baby backs should) very succulent pork flavor and very lean meat! at only $14 for a full rack with 2 sides and bread you can not go wrong ordering these. They finish the ribs off on a hot grill to get a bit of char on the outside. Just HEAVEN on a bone!!!!!
