Restaurant Reviews: Dreamland Bar-B-Que (Tuscaloosa, AL)
We Decided to visit this BBQ shack on our way back from Tennessee on the advice of our Father Donald Blevins whom has eaten here many times on his vacation travels over the years. We were a tad wary to enter such a town (Home of the Alabama Crimson Tide) as we are die hard LSU Tiger fans, but This proved to be great advise. We are here to report this place is still every bit as good as they were back in the day! and they had no issues with us being from LSU country. They greeted us with open arms and we even had a few jabs back and forth with the staff and patrons about the upcoming football season. A simple but awesome menu hangs over the bar. (Ribs, Sausage, Sauce, white bread) and side dishes (Beans, Coleslaw, Potato salad) The Keep it Simple Rule is in FULL effect here at Dreamland and we LOVE IT!!
As soon as you choose your seat a friendly waitress will bring you a plate full of Perfectly plain white bread with a side of BBQ sauce. This is sometimes used as an appetizer, or saved to eat with the meal. We did a bit of both! The bread goes great with the tangy sauce.
We were then asked what we would like to eat. We went with everything!! A FULL Slab of Ribs. A “Half Sausage” Which was one large link of Polish sausage & a double size of all 3 sides. The ribs were everything they are Hyped up to be and more. They use spare ribs with the tips still in tact (Most places remove the tips) We liked this fact. the tips are often discarded and are underrated. when done correctly the tips are very tender and flavorful!! The ribs here are smoked using a sauce only (No dry rub) and are then finished off on a hot grill to get them nice and charred up on the surface, just wonderful, Especially along with alternating bites of the white bread!! We loved the tenderness level, just right. Meat pulled from the bone easily but not so tender it falls off the bones before you can get it to your mouth.
The Polish sausage was also very fine. smoked to perfection. Very tender, nice “snap” to the casing, & served dry with no sauce we of course sliced it up and dunked the sausage into the cups of sauce!! I even made a small sandwich out of it.
Side dishes were also good. Baked beans were Excellent, some of the best I have ever had. Potato salad was also good, Coleslaw was ok, but very dry not nearly enough dressing for my taste, but was still a good pallet cleanser between dishes.
Just to show you how much we enjoyed the food here is the aftermath!!
We Thought we were done after all of this great food, but it was pointed out to us by our waitress that they offered Home made banana Pudding!! How could we pass on that?! So we had her bring us each a small order. It was worth squeezing this in because it was wonderful! Very creamy pudding, real sliced fruit and a local brand cookie mixed in and topped with whipped cream.
SO, if you find yourself wanting some real deal BBQ and you are anywhere withing driving distance get your Butt over to dreamland!!!! you will be satisfied in every way possible as pertains to a BBQ experience!!
