Restaurant Reviews: China 1 (Baton Rouge, LA)
China 1 is a new Chinese place that offers Dine in, Take out, or delivery services. The Menu consist of the standard Chinese take out items you see at most similar restaurants, but they also offer high end items like fresh sushi rolls and Peking Duck. We decided to test their delivery side this time. the person who tok my order was very friendly, spoke English perfectly and was knowledgeable about the menu. Food was delivered within 30 minutes, was piping hot and order was correct.
First dish was the Buffalo wings with plain fried rice. These were like your standard buffalo wing, fried and coated with a sauce made from hot sauce and butter. Sauce was a tad thicker and milder than what you from a wing shop. Their “Plain fried rice” came along side. We really liked the rice. it was very tasty and served as a good buffer from the spicy of the wings.
Next, we sampled the Dumplings. Half Steamed and half Fried. These were fantastic. They are stuffed with a mild pork sausage and served with a green onion flavored dipping sauce. The sauce is essential. Matches perfectly with the dumplings. The steamed and fried versions were equally good. Steamed are more tender. Fried have a slightly crispy crust.
We then moved on to a dish we rarely see offered from these types of places.. Spare rib TIPS. Yes Tips, not the boneless bbq ribs strips that you normally see. Although the sauce was very similar to other Chinese offerings (sweet, dark pink BBQ sauce), the meat is not. the spare rib tips have excellent quality meat on them. There are charred up nice on a grill and super tender. Almost no fat to speak of on the ribs. We enjoyed eating these with our hands and pulling the meat from the bone with our teeth. it gives the experience of eating a rack of ribs at an expensive rib house. Lovely dish for sure.
Lastly we tried the House special Chow Mein: Wok fried noodles with Beef, Pork, Chicken, and Shrimp and a veggie assortment. All tossed in a flavorful house made brown sauce. As you can see the portion was more than ample. The many layers of flavor keep this dish fresh as each bite was a little different than the last. We also loved to mix the white rice in the beautiful sauce. and ate that along side the Chow Mein. Meat was good quality and plenty of it!
This place may resemble your average Chinese take out joint, but we say it is a notch or 2 above the norm. We plan to try the Peking Duck and Sushi on our next visit.
